3D Printing Guidelines
These guidelines outline allowable use, copyright considerations, submission steps, and technical specifications for 3D printing at the Levi Watkins Learning Center (LWLC).
Our User Agreement
- The LWLC’s 3D printer must only be used for lawful purposes. Users are not permitted to request prints that are prohibited by local, state, or federal law.
- Unsafe or otherwise harmful items (including weapons or parts), items that could endanger people or property, or items that might be used for such purposes are not allowed.
- Obscene or otherwise inappropriate items for the LWLC environment are not permitted.
- Jobs must be able to be completed within library hours; work that cannot be finished before closing may be declined or rescheduled.
- The LWLC is not responsible for design errors. Files must be prepared by the patron; staff will not modify designs.
- Patrons will not operate the 3D printer; only trained staff and designated student assistants/volunteers have hands‑on access.
- Completion times are estimates and depend on the current queue; no guarantees can be made.
- Items not picked up within 30 days may become the property of the library.
- Submitted digital files may be deleted after the print is completed.
Copyright Policy
Copyright protects original works of authorship (including digital models). Unauthorized reproduction, duplication, distribution, or creation of derivative works may constitute infringement. If you do not own the rights to a model, it is your responsibility to ensure that your use is permitted before submission.
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)
Under the DMCA (1998), it is unlawful to circumvent technological measures that control access to copyrighted works or to traffic in devices designed for circumvention. Activity deemed criminal under the DMCA includes:
- Producing or distributing devices, services, or technologies primarily designed to bypass access controls protecting copyrighted works.
- Circumventing such access controls, whether or not direct infringement occurs.
3D Print Submission Process
- Submit your file using the 3D Print Request Form.
- Staff review your file and provide a cost estimate within days of submission ($0.10/gram, $1 minimum).
- Pay with the library print card before printing begins.
- Please allow a few days after payment for printing.
- We will email you when your job is ready for pickup at the circulation desk.

- Format: .STL or .GCODE only (no ZIP archives).
- Maximum print time: 2 hours (jobs longer than that will not be accepted).
