Nelson Malden

Nelson Malden has operated a barber shop at the center of Centennial Hill on the corner of Jackson and High Streets, at the base of the Ben Moore Hotel. He also attended and graduated from Alabama State University, and was a member of Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church. During his half century as a Montgomery barber, Malden served as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1950s, he assisted in organizing and distributing the Southern Courier newspaper, participated in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and witnessed the student protest movement, Freedom Rides, and the Selma to Montgomery March.
